You Can’t Buy Happiness

But you can buy dirt.

I am a sucker for a good, sentimental country song that touches your soul and reminds you of what really matters in this life.

I recently discovered “Buy Dirt“ by Jordan Davis and Luke Bryan. Instant download and it has been on repeat pretty much all day in my car and in my brain. Ha!

Here. Give it a listen:

I am guilty of chasing the next thing.

I am guilty of fighting for my dreams and whatever else that may have caught my eye at the moment. I can get distracted by my to do lists and all of the accolades and achievements and places I want to visit and worlds I want to conquer.

The hustler in me wants to win so badly, that even she can lose sight of what is important.

Lately, God has been drawing me toward the simple things that often get put on the back burner.

A cozy night in with a home cooked meal, a movie night and some story telling with someone I love, without any of the pressure.

Deep conversations with my kids and getting to know them better.

A good, hard, productive day at work and feeling good about that work.

Watching as my babies are no longer babies, but becoming a young woman and a young man.

Planting roots with those same kids.

Connecting with people.

Worshipping side by side with friends and loved ones.

Going after our dreams is fantastic. I am a dreamer at heart. My visions for my life are truly larger than life. I want to be a part of something so great and magnificent. I truly do.

But, I also know that should I reach all of those dreams, and I am alone at the end of it all, I am not sure I would take such pleasure in it. I was saying just the other day to someone that when I win in this life, I want them there, because I can no longer imagine them not being there or being a part of my life.

We can’t buy our happiness. We can things, sure. And they may bring us a small bit of happiness. But it truly isn’t as wonderful as having a hand to hold, or a chest to rest on.

Or having a dear friend to confide in.

Or the sound of laughter booming through your home. Holidays, joy, goodness, music, love, heart, kindness, generosity.

You just cannot manufacture those type of beautiful gifts.

On my phone, I created a wall paper that holds photos of my people, with a caption that reads “The Important Things.”

The things that truly count and matter in this life.

More importantly, what matters the most to me. What I wake up for every single day. There will be additional faces added, for sure, but every time I stare at those faces, I tell myself that this is what life is really about.

It is not about winning the rat race and making a lot of money and traveling the world.

I was created to love and serve people, and to keep the main thing the main thing.

You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy dirt.
