Who Told You?

The other day, one of our children was struggling with some things in their heart, things I didn’t know about. Being the nosy mom that I am, I did a little digging to understand and possibly help this child through whatever it was that they were struggling with.

Upon my searching, it was brought to my attention that this child had been sharing their struggles and frustrations with their friends. When I confronted them, they said the following:

“I didn’t want you to be mad at me or to judge me.”

My next thought was “Who told you that I would be mad at you or judge you for sharing what is on your heart?”

This morning, my mind was instantly transported to Genesis, where Adam and Eve have taken a piece of the fruit from the tree that God instructed them not to take from. God called out to them to meet with them and they hid themselves for they were afraid.

“And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, "Where are you?" And he said, "I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself." He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?"”

The very first recording of fear and sin in the Bible shows us two people, created by the hands and breath of God, hid from Him out of fear and shame for their sin.

They wrestled because their nakedness had been exposed. Who had told them they were naked? They had not known nakedness or shame, or fear, until someone else told them. And that someone else made them distrust the words and heart of their Creator.

It is just like the enemy to deceive and twist what God says in order to cause doubt in our minds about Him. To not fully trust Him.

Who told you, sister, that God could not be trusted with your needs?

Who told you that you had to hide in shame because of your inner turmoil? That speaking out and laying it at His feet wasn’t safe?

Who told you that God’s promises were untrue?

Who told you that you were too much or too little for Him? That you were too far gone for Him to redeem and rescue?

Who told you that you were naked?

The enemy would love nothing more to than to take what faith we have in God, in His goodness and distort it so that we would hide in shame and fear from our Creator.

The enemy wants victory over us. The enemy wants to destroy God’s children. The enemy wants to cripple us. Because if he can do that, he believes it will stall his inevitable end.

But God is already victorious because of His plan for us through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Our nakedness, shame, fears, sins will be exposed from time to time. We are human beings, after all. We all have fallen short. But, we do not have to hide our nakedness anymore. We can still come to the light and be seen by God and loved by Him.

Who told you that you were naked? Whoever told you, still come into the light.
